In a revealing turn of events surrounding the arrest of the outspoken activist Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan, his lawyer has come forward with accusations against three prominent figures in the entertainment industry. The legal representative claims that Nollywood actresses Tonto Dikeh and Iyabo Ojo, alongside music producer Samklef, played pivotal roles in the legal actions leading to VeryDarkMan’s detention.
VeryDarkMan found himself in police custody following a petition filed by Tonto Dikeh, accusing him of cyberbullying and issuing threats against her safety. The activist had previously implicated Dikeh in the controversial beginnings of the GistLover blog, a move that he claims resulted in numerous threats to her life from those opposed to the blog.
Despite expectations of VeryDarkMan’s release on Monday, his legal team has encountered significant hurdles due to the stringent bail conditions set by the authorities. These conditions include owning property and a business in Abuja, the endorsement of a government official, the relinquishment of his foreign passport for one year, and a substantial cash bond of N200 million.
In a newly released video, VeryDarkMan’s lawyer detailed their efforts to comply with the bail requirements, including securing the support of two high-ranking government officials. However, the absence of the presiding authority has stalled the process of securing VeryDarkMan’s release.
The lawyer expressed confidence in the police’s professionalism regarding the bail process but did not shy away from stating their readiness to pursue legal action should bail be unjustly withheld. He underscored their commitment to adhering to due process and highlighted VeryDarkMan’s constitutional right to peaceful protest, whether online or offline.
