Muyiwa Adesokun, the director behind the critically acclaimed Nigerian crime thriller, Shina, is still grappling with the unexpected success of his debut film. The movie, which premiered on Netflix on June 14, 2024, has defied expectations by spending weeks on the platform’s Top 10 chart, even reaching the number two spot in Nigeria.

“It’s surreal,” Adesokun admits in an exclusive interview with Pulse Nigeria. I didn’t expect it to be on Netflix for 49 days, seven weeks! It means a lot to me and the team. It surpassed our expectations.”

A Story That Resonated

Shina follows the story of a former drug addict turned taxi driver who finds himself entangled in a dangerous web of crime. The film’s gritty realism, coupled with strong performances from a talented cast, including Timini Egbuson and Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, has resonated with audiences both in Nigeria and internationally.

Adesokun believes that the film’s success can be attributed to its authenticity and relatability. “We wanted to tell a story that people could connect with on a personal level,” he says. The challenges faced by the protagonist, Shina, are similar to those experienced by many people in our society.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite the film’s success, Adesokun acknowledges the numerous challenges faced during the production process. Funding, technical limitations, and the pressure to deliver a quality product were among the obstacles he had to overcome.

Filmmaking in Nigeria is not without its challenges,” he says. “But I believe that with passion, determination, and a good story, you can overcome any obstacle.”

The Future of Nollywood

The success of Shina has ignited hope for the future of Nollywood. The film’s performance on Netflix has demonstrated the potential for Nigerian films to reach a global audience. Adesokun believes that this is just the beginning and that there is a bright future for the Nigerian film industry.

We have a rich storytelling tradition in Nigeria,” he says. With the right support and investment, we can create world-class films that compete on the global stage.”
