Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to purge the Nigeria Police Force of corrupt officers, advocating for a cleaner, more efficient force. This call was made during the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations Ceremony in Abuja, where Akpabio highlighted the need for ethical rejuvenation within the police ranks.

Commitment to Police Reform

In his address, Akpabio commended the efforts of the police leadership in organizing the event, which he described as a testament to IGP Egbetokun’s dedication to honoring the police force’s commendable members. He emphasized the ceremony’s role in recognizing the gallant and patriotic services of individual officers, which serves to motivate and uphold the new policing agenda focused on internal ethical regeneration, restoring professional standards, and enhancing anti-corruption measures.

Addressing Challenges in Policing

The Senate President pointed out the significant challenges facing the police, including the evolving nature of crime and the sophistication of criminal activities. “As we honor the good officers, let us weed out the bad ones because a chain is as strong as its weakest link,” Akpabio stated, underlining the importance of integrity within the force to combat these issues effectively.

Legislative and Financial Support

Akpabio reassured the police force of the National Assembly’s unwavering support, promising to continue providing the necessary legislative framework and resources needed for effective policing. He acknowledged the critical role of a well-equipped and motivated police force in maintaining security and public well-being across Nigeria.

Recognition of Fallen Heroes

The event also served as an occasion to honor fallen police officers, with posthumous awards given to seven personnel killed in Delta State earlier in the year. Families of the deceased were presented with awards and cheques for their entitlements. Acknowledging their sacrifice, Akpabio announced personal financial support, as well as additional aid from the Senate, to assist these families.

Nationwide Support for Policing

The ceremony saw various stakeholders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, extending their support and commendations. Both leaders made significant financial contributions to the families of the deceased officers, reflecting a collective commitment to supporting those who serve the nation.

The event not only recognized individual excellence and sacrifice within the police force but also reinforced the ongoing commitment at the highest levels of government to support and reform policing in Nigeria. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to ensure safety and security across the nation, amidst challenges of corruption and sophisticated crime.
