President Tinubu Honors 17 Slain Soldiers with National Awards and Promises Befitting Burial

President Bola Tinubu has announced the approval of national honors for 17 soldiers who tragically lost their lives while on a peacekeeping mission in Delta State. In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the President has committed to ensuring a dignified burial for these heroes, highlighting the nation’s gratitude for their ultimate sacrifice.

The announcement came as President Tinubu broke the Ramadan fast with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, alongside other leaders of the House. Expressing his deep condolences to the families of the fallen, President Tinubu underscored the importance of acknowledging the soldiers’ bravery and dedication to Nigeria. “In responding to distress calls, they met the end of their lives in a savage manner. Let us work to sympathise and symbolize the fact that they are worth the sacrifices they have made for Nigeria,” he remarked.

The soldiers were killed in an ambush by residents of the Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, according to Major General Cecil Esekhaigbe (retd.). This act of violence has stirred widespread condemnation, prompting a robust response from the Nigerian Army and the Defence Headquarters. The Army has arrested about 20 suspects in connection with the incident, dismissing any notions of reprisal against the community while promising that those responsible will face justice.

The Defence Headquarters has released the names of the Army personnel who perished during the mission, as the nation mourns the loss of its protectors. In a statement, the military emphasized that no amount of propaganda would deter the pursuit of justice for the fallen soldiers, vowing “injurious consequences” for the culprits.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas echoed the sentiment of unity and support for President Tinubu during these challenging times, urging the nation to embrace forgiveness, generosity, and prayer, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. Reflecting on the administration’s first 10 months, Abbas praised the synergy between the executive and the legislature, pledging continued collaboration to advance the country’s progress.
