President Bola Tinubu has announced comprehensive support measures for the families of the fallen soldiers. During a solemn ceremony held at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja on March 27, 2024, President Tinubu declared that the federal government would provide full scholarships up to the university level for all children, including those yet unborn, of the Nigerian Army personnel killed in action.

Understanding the importance of swift support, President Tinubu has directed the military authorities to expedite the process of disbursing the benefits owed to the bereaved families, ensuring that they are paid within a 90-day timeframe. Furthermore, in a gesture of lasting support, the President announced that the federal government would provide a house in any part of the nation to each family of the four officers and thirteen soldiers who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.

The funeral, attended by state governors, military leaders, and the families of the deceased, was a moment of national mourning and reflection. In recognition of their bravery and sacrifice, President Tinubu posthumously awarded National Honours to the 17 fallen heroes. Lt Col Ali, Major D.E Obi, Major S.D. Ashafa, and Captain U. Zakari were honored with the Member of the Order of Niger (MON), while the remaining soldiers received Federal Republic Medals.

Recalling the events leading to the tragedy, President Tinubu recounted how Lt. Colonel A. H. Ali, alongside his team, embarked on a peacekeeping mission in the Okuama Community to mediate a dispute with the neighboring Okoloba Community. Despite their peaceful intentions and lack of heavy armaments, they were met with a cowardly attack, leading to their untimely demise.

President Tinubu praised Lt. Colonel Ali’s distinguished service in various operational theaters across Nigeria before his deployment to the Niger Delta, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to his military duties.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to justice, President Tinubu vowed to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in achieving this goal. He also commended the military for its restraint and dedication to ensuring peace rather than seeking reprisal.

In his address, President Tinubu extended his deepest condolences to the families of the fallen heroes and the Armed Forces, praying for divine comfort during this difficult time. He acknowledged the profound debt of gratitude owed to the soldiers and their families, highlighting their contributions to national security and peace.

As the nation mourns the loss of these valiant soldiers, President Tinubu called on the Armed Forces to continue their noble service in defense of the country, honoring the memory of their fallen comrades by dedicating themselves anew to the cause of peace and security.

This announcement by President Tinubu underscores the government’s recognition of the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families, reaffirming its commitment to supporting them during their time of need.
