Pelumi Nubi, a 28-year-old travel content creator, embarked on a groundbreaking solo road trip from London to Lagos, driving her Peugeot 107 across continents to bridge the gap between West Africa and the rest of the world. Her journey, which spanned 68 days, aimed to challenge perceptions and inspire a new generation of explorers, especially young women, to take on what many might deem impossible. Nubi’s adventure was not just a personal quest but a bold statement about the representation of Nigerians and Africans in the realm of long-distance land travel.

Speaking to TheHypeNaija, Nubi shared her excitement about the overwhelming reception she received upon her arrival in Lagos. Her mission was deeply personal, born out of a desire to connect her two homes: Lagos, where she was born, and London, where she grew up. By choosing to travel over land, she sought to explore West Africa more intimately than air travel would allow, and to increase visibility for people like her in overland travel narratives.

The journey was fraught with challenges, including a crash in March that left her vehicle severely damaged. Yet, Nubi’s spirit remained unbroken, fueled by the support of her growing online family, which soared from 10,000 to over 200,000 followers. Their encouragement was a testament to the impact of her journey, reshaping narratives about Africa and showcasing the continent’s beauty and diversity.

Professor Nubi Gbenga, Pelumi’s father, recounted the family’s anxiety during her journey, particularly during nights she spent by the roadside or in the desert. Yet, their fears were outweighed by gratitude for her safe return, recognizing it as a blessing and a testament to divine protection.

Upon reaching the Nigeria-Benin Republic border, Nubi was accorded a hero’s welcome, organized by the Lagos State Government. Commissioner of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, and the Special Adviser, Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, represented the government, celebrating Nubi’s remarkable feat.

Pelumi Nubi’s journey from London to Lagos is a compelling narrative of resilience, exploration, and the breaking of boundaries. It not only highlights her personal triumph but also underscores the potential for travel to foster greater understanding and connectivity between Africa and the world.
