Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, voiced a critical observation regarding the political aspirations of Nigerian youths, during a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. According to Sowore, the majority of young Nigerians seem solely focused on securing roles as Personal Assistants (PAs) to high-ranking officials, including the President and governors, rather than aiming for leadership positions themselves.
This commentary came in the wake of Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s inauguration as the President of Senegal. At 44 years old, Faye’s presidency represents a notable shift towards younger leadership in African politics, a trend Sowore advocates for within Nigeria. During the interview, Sowore highlighted the contrast between the political engagement of youths in Nigeria and the example set by Senegal’s recent presidential transition, expressing disappointment in the lack of ambition among Nigerian youths to seek higher offices or leadership roles.
Sowore’s critique extends to what he describes as the youth’s preference for ancillary positions within the political hierarchy, such as special assistants, over striving for principal leadership roles. He stressed the importance of youthfulness, vision, and drive for change, qualities he believes are essential for effective leadership but are often overshadowed by the current political culture that favors older, established figures.
In urging Nigerian youths to embrace a more daring approach to politics, Sowore referenced the Not Too Young Bill signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, which was designed to lower age barriers for political office. Despite this legislative effort to empower young candidates, Sowore argues that real change requires action and ambition beyond what any law can provide. He emphasizes the necessity for youths to proactively “take power,” challenging them to rise above the status quo and pursue significant leadership roles to effect meaningful change in Nigeria.
Sowore’s call to action seeks to inspire a new generation of leaders in Nigeria, encouraging young individuals to look beyond subordinate positions and aspire to make substantial contributions to their country’s political landscape, mirroring the youthful leadership emerging in other parts of Africa.
