In a distressing turn of events on March 18, 2024, the Nigerian Army launched a raid on Igbomotoru community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, leading to significant destruction and loss of lives. According to reports, the operation involved the deployment of five gunboats and resulted in the razing of three houses believed to be the hideouts of a militant leader implicated in the recent killing of military personnel on a rescue mission in Delta State.

The attack on Igbomotoru community has reportedly left about 11 residents dead, raising concerns over the military’s approach to conflict resolution and the impact on civilian populations. Ayibakipreye Solomon Clarkson Suobo, a community leader, has issued an SOS alert to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, calling for immediate intervention to prevent further loss of life and property.

Suobo’s message highlights the tension between the need for security operations and the protection of innocent civilians. He condemned the initial act of violence against the military in Delta State but criticized the manner in which the army’s subsequent operation in Igbomotoru was conducted. According to Suobo, the military’s actions have placed the entire community under siege, affecting many who are far removed from the conflicts in Delta State.

This incident underscores the broader challenges facing Nigeria in addressing internal security threats, including militancy and the delicate balance between taking decisive action against perpetrators of violence and ensuring the safety and rights of civilians. The community leader’s appeal for a “carrot and stick” approach reflects a call for more nuanced strategies that prioritize engagement, intelligence gathering, and community safety alongside military operations.

As the situation unfolds, there are urgent calls for peacekeeping agencies and human rights organizations to step in and assess the impact on Igbomotoru’s residents. The community’s plea for support is a stark reminder of the complex interplay between security, governance, and civilian welfare in regions plagued by unrest and violence.
