Accra, Ghana – March 24, 2024 – The African Games drew to a spectacular close in Ghana, with Nigeria securing the second position in the overall medals tally, following an impressive 16 days of sportsmanship across Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast. The event, celebrated for its showcase of continental athletic prowess, concluded with a memorable closing ceremony featuring the parade of participating countries’ flags and the vibrant sounds of Nigerian hip-hop star Tiwa Savage.
Egypt continued its dominance in the African Games, topping the medals chart with a remarkable haul of 189 medals, including 101 golds, thereby retaining its position as the continent’s sports powerhouse. Nigeria followed with an impressive collection of 120 medals in total, comprising 47 gold, 33 silver, and 40 bronze medals. South Africa rounded off the top three with 106 medals, while Algeria and Tunisia secured the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
Ghana, the host nation, despite initial challenges, showcased a commendable performance, finishing sixth with 19 gold, 29 silver, and 20 bronze medals. The Games, which saw participation from 53 of Africa’s 54 countries, celebrated the region’s rich cultural heritage and unity through sports. Cape Verde was the only country absent from this year’s edition.
The 13th edition of the African Games, initially scheduled for August 2023, faced delays due to the completion of facilities and marketing revenue issues but eventually unfolded as a memorable championship in March 2024. The University of Ghana Sports Stadium hosted an opening ceremony that captivated attendees with a celebration of Africa’s diversity, cultural richness, and sporting talent.
