The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dealt a major blow to drug trafficking in Nigeria, intercepting a massive consignment of codeine syrup and Loud cannabis strain worth billions of naira in Lagos and Port Harcourt. The seizures highlight the ongoing battle against the influx of dangerous narcotics into the country.
Loud Bust Nets Grandpa Smuggler
At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, NDLEA operatives, working in collaboration with other security agencies, intercepted a large consignment of Loud cannabis strain. The seized drugs, weighing a staggering 164.50kg, were cleverly disguised and contained within 320 parcels. A 70-year-old Nigerian man, resident in Germany but traveling from Toronto, Canada, was apprehended in connection with this smuggling attempt.
Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy for the NDLEA, confirmed the arrest and revealed the suspect’s travel itinerary. This audacious attempt by a senior citizen to smuggle such a significant quantity of narcotics raises serious concerns about the evolving tactics employed by drug traffickers.
Massive Codeine Syrup Haul at Port Harcourt Seaports
Meanwhile, at the Port Harcourt seaports, a joint examination by NDLEA, Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), and other security agencies resulted in the seizure of a container originating from India. This container, marked TEMU 6807401 and destined for Enugu, contained a staggering 1,750 cartons of codeine syrup, with a total weight of 26,250kg. The street value of this seized codeine syrup is estimated at a staggering N1.225 billion ($3 million).
Codeine cough syrup, a prescription medication with potentially addictive properties, has become a major concern in Nigeria. Widely abused for its psychoactive effects, codeine syrup can lead to dependence, addiction, and even death.
