In a dramatic bust that has sent shockwaves through the drug underworld, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a Spain-bound businessman for attempting to smuggle cocaine out of Nigeria. The suspect, identified as Francis Akajiobi, a 50-year-old businessman, was apprehended at the departure hall of Terminal 2, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday, July 25, 2024.
A meticulous search by NDLEA operatives uncovered 1.2 kilograms of cocaine meticulously concealed within the soles of the businessman’s sandals. Akajiobi was preparing to board a Royal Air Maroc flight to Madrid, Spain, when he was intercepted. The arrest has exposed a sophisticated smuggling operation and highlighted the agency’s unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking.
War on Drugs Intensifies
The seizure of cocaine from Akajiobi is the latest in a series of successes recorded by the NDLEA in its ongoing battle against drug cartels. The agency has intensified its efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks and dismantle criminal organizations involved in the illicit trade.
In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives stormed an expansive cannabis farm in the Owena forest, Oriade Local Government Area, Osun State. The raid, conducted on Friday, July 26, 2024, led to the destruction of 31,250 kilograms of cannabis spread across 12.5 hectares of farmland. Additionally, 84 kilograms of processed cannabis sativa were seized, and 17 suspects were arrested in connection with the operation.
The discovery of the cannabis farm underscores the scale of illicit drug cultivation in Nigeria and the determination of the NDLEA to eradicate this menace. The agency has vowed to intensify its efforts to identify and dismantle other cannabis plantations across the country.
The Menace of Drug Trafficking
Drug trafficking poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s security, economy, and social fabric. The proceeds from drug trafficking are often used to fund terrorism, corruption, and other criminal activities. The NDLEA’s operations are crucial in disrupting these illicit networks and protecting the nation’s youth from the devastating consequences of drug abuse.
The arrest of the cocaine smuggler and the destruction of the cannabis farm are significant victories in the war against drugs. However, the agency acknowledges that the challenges are immense. The NDLEA has called for increased collaboration between law enforcement agencies, both domestically and internationally, to effectively combat drug trafficking.
A Call for Public Support
The NDLEA has urged the public to support its efforts by providing timely information about drug-related activities. The agency has assured the public of its commitment to protecting lives and safeguarding the nation from the scourge of drug abuse.
As the NDLEA continues its relentless pursuit of drug traffickers, the nation looks forward to more successes in the fight against this menace.
