In a striking declaration, Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle has called on all northern appointees in the Nigerian government to either unequivocally support President Bola Tinubu’s administration or resign from their positions. This call comes amidst rising political tensions and differing opinions within the government, particularly highlighted by a recent dispute with Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Special Adviser on Political Matters to the Presidency.

Matawalle’s statement follows criticism from Dr. Baba-Ahmed, who expressed dissatisfaction with Matawalle’s defense of President Tinubu’s administration. Dr. Baba-Ahmed, formerly a spokesperson for the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), responded to the Minister’s critique of the NEF, which recently expressed regret over its support for Tinubu in the 2023 general elections. The NEF described its past support as a “political burden on the North,” sparking a heated exchange of views.

On social media, Dr. Baba-Ahmed voiced that Minister Matawalle’s approach was “ill-advised” and suggested that acknowledging the contributions of northern ministers and other appointees could have presented a stronger defense of the administration’s achievements, particularly in security and poverty reduction in the North.

In a robust response, Minister Matawalle emphasized the responsibility of government appointees, including Dr. Baba-Ahmed, to actively work towards the success of the administration they serve. He stated, “As appointees of the government from the North, we must all take a stand, be unequivocal and be counted in the roll of honours for our support and work for the success of the administration we are serving.”

The Minister also highlighted that the current political climate is not one for passive stances but requires active advocacy and defense of the government’s policies and achievements. “This is not the time to keep quiet in the face of intimidation and misrepresentation of the efforts and achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. We must stand up to be counted for being on the part of the government or take our exit,” he declared.

This development underscores a broader call for solidarity within the government amidst challenges and critiques from various sectors, including influential groups like the NEF. The insistence on allegiance could intensify debates on governance and policy directions in Nigeria, especially as the administration seeks to navigate complex national issues amid diverse regional perspectives within the government.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how other northern appointees will respond to Matawalle’s ultimatum, and what impact this internal push for conformity will have on the dynamics of President Tinubu’s administration.
