Nigerian naval forces have dealt a significant blow to illegal oil operations in Ondo State, destroying nine illicit refining sites and seizing 35,000 litres of stolen petroleum products during a precision raid in the coastal Obenla community. The operation, conducted by the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Igbokoda on January 6, uncovered a sophisticated network of illegal refineries hidden within local farmland.
Navy Captain Aliyu Usman, Commander of FOB Igbokoda, revealed that intelligence-led operations resulted in the discovery of 20,000 litres of unprocessed crude oil alongside 15,000 litres of illegally refined diesel. The raid targeted a complex of makeshift refineries operating under the cover of agricultural activities in the Ilaje Local Government Area.
Despite the substantial seizure, the perpetrators managed to evade capture, having apparently been tipped off about the impending naval operation. On arrival at the scene, the perpetrators had fled, obviously informed about our coming in fear of arrest,” Captain Usman explained during a press briefing on Thursday.
The discovery highlights the ongoing challenge faced by security forces in Nigeria’s oil-rich coastal regions, where illegal refineries continue to operate despite increased surveillance and enforcement efforts.
