In a heart-wrenching incident in Lagos’s Ejigbo district, a community football match between youths ended in tragedy. On the afternoon of Friday, March 30, what began as a friendly game turned fatal when a dispute escalated between two young friends, leading to the death of one of the children.

During the match, a 10-year-old boy, identified only as Israel, and his friend, Ezekiel, became embroiled in a heated argument. In the heat of the moment, Israel reportedly strangled Ezekiel, causing him to cease breathing. Frantic efforts to save Ezekiel ensued as he was immediately rushed to Isolo General Hospital in Lagos, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.

Following the incident, Israel was taken into police custody, marking the start of a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to this tragic outcome. Ezekiel’s body has since been transferred to the mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination to officially ascertain the cause of death.

This grievous incident brings to light the urgent need for enhanced conflict resolution and safety awareness among children. It serves as a somber reminder to parents, guardians, and the community at large of the importance of supervising children’s play activities closely to prevent such unfortunate events in the future. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a young life, and our condolences go out to the families affected by this profound tragedy.
