The impeachment panel tasked with probing allegations of misconduct against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu is slated to commence its sessions on April 3, 2024. The investigative body, established by Edo State Chief Judge Daniel Okungbowa, aims to meticulously examine the charges levied against Shaibu by the Edo State House of Assembly. These proceedings, anticipated to unfold at the Judges Conference Room within the New High Court Complex in Benin, come in the wake of accusations including perjury and unauthorized disclosure of government secrets directed at the Deputy Governor.

The initiation of impeachment proceedings by the House of Assembly on March 5 marked the beginning of a highly publicized rift between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki, a relationship strained further by Shaibu’s expressed ambition to contest in the upcoming gubernatorial election in Edo. Attempts to physically serve Shaibu with the impeachment notice were thwarted due to his absence from the state, compelling the House to opt for substituted service by publishing the notice in three national newspapers.

The Chief Judge’s action on March 22 to form a seven-member panel to investigate these allegations took a twist when two members, Prof Violet Aigbokhaebo and Prof Boniface Onomion Edegbai, were subsequently removed from the panel for undisclosed reasons. The revised panel is chaired by Justice S.A. Omonua (retd.), with Professor Theresa Akpoghome, Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, Dr. Andrew Oliha, Idris Abdulkareen, President Aigbokhian, and Mariam Erakhoba Ilavbare serving as members.

In a statement by the panel’s administrative secretary, George Odidi, it was revealed that the panel is poised to begin its deliberations promptly at 10 am on the specified date. All concerned parties, including their legal representatives, are expected to be present, with the complainant prepared to present its case against the Deputy Governor.

This impeachment inquiry not only highlights the intensifying political tensions within Edo State but also underscores the complex dynamics at play as the state gears up for its gubernatorial election. As the panel prepares to scrutinize the allegations against Deputy Governor Shaibu, the outcome of these proceedings could have far-reaching implications for the political landscape of Edo State.
