In a somber turn of events for the people of Ibadanland and beyond, the revered monarch Oba Lekan Balogun, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, has passed away at the age of 81. His departure marks the end of a remarkable era in the history of Ibadan, leaving a legacy of wisdom, leadership, and cultural enrichment.

Oba Balogun’s journey to his ancestors came after a brief illness, with reports noting his hospitalization following symptoms of slight malaria. His health deteriorated rapidly, leading to his passing in the late hours of Thursday evening at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. The announcement was made by Dr. Kola Balogun, the Baba-Kekere Olubadan and brother to the late monarch, through a statement released by the Personal Assistant (Media) to the late monarch, Oladele Ogunsola.

The Olubadan was a figure of monumental achievements and was distinguished as the most educated monarch to have ever ascended the throne in Ibadan. His educational background was notable, with a Ph.D. from Britain, a former career as a university lecturer, and a former gubernatorial candidate. Oba Balogun’s vast experience extended to the corporate world, having been part of the management team at Shell British Petroleum, showcasing a blend of traditional leadership with modern governance and business acumen.

His reign saw him actively involved in the affairs of Ibadanland, with his last official outing at the Olubadan Advisory Council’s meeting, which he presided over. Oba Balogun’s commitment to the welfare and development of Ibadanland was evident in his actions and decisions, particularly concerning the sales of land and the structuring of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

Governor Seyi Makinde, in paying tribute, described Oba Balogun as an “epitome of royal excellence and a great achiever,” acknowledging the significant impact he had made in a short period. Makinde’s statement reflected the collective grief and respect of the people of Ibadan and Oyo State, offering condolences to the monarch’s family, the Olubadan-in-Council, and the wider community.

Oba Balogun’s burial is scheduled to take place at his Aliiwo ancestral home, according to Islamic rites, underscoring the respect and adherence to cultural traditions in honoring the departed monarch.
