A source within the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has accused Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo of using his constitutional immunity to shield his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, from arrest.
The allegations came to light following Bello’s recent visit to the EFCC headquarters. While Bello had previously been declared wanted over allegations of money laundering and corruption amounting to N80.2 billion, he was able to avoid detention with the assistance of Governor Ododo.
The EFCC has faced criticism for its handling of the situation. Despite their attempts to apprehend Bello, the agency has been hampered by political pressure and the former governor’s immunity.
In April, Ododo reportedly facilitated Bello’s escape from EFCC operatives during a previous raid in Abuja. The Kogi State governor’s actions have raised questions about his commitment to justice and transparency.
The EFCC has maintained that Bello remains wanted and that his immunity does not prevent his arrest. However, the agency has faced challenges in enforcing its mandate due to political interference and the complex legal landscape surrounding immunity.
The incident highlights the ongoing struggle against corruption in Nigeria and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in holding powerful individuals accountable.
