During a candid appearance on Channels TV’s “Politics Today,” Ayuba Wabba, the past president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), disclosed significant developments concerning Julius Abure, the national chairman of the Labour Party (LP). Wabba reported that a police investigation has concluded with an indictment of Abure, setting the stage for possible prosecution amidst an intensifying crisis within the Labour Party.
The situation has escalated recently, as demonstrated by the picketing of the LP’s national headquarters in Abuja by NLC members. This action underscores the deepening turmoil and division within the party. Wabba revealed that he was made aware of the indictment through a report presented to him prior to his departure from office. The report detailed Abure’s avoidance of law enforcement, presumably in an effort to escape legal accountability. “Police have conducted a thorough investigation and have indeed indicted him. The evidence was compelling enough to forward to me even before I completed my term. We have since called upon the police to initiate prosecution. It is apparent he has been avoiding police interaction,” Wabba explained.
Further shedding light on the nature of the accusations, Wabba indicated that the police’s comprehensive inquiry unearthed evidence of fraudulent activities linked to Abure within the Labour Party framework. After receiving the indictment report, Wabba ensured its continuity by passing it to his successor, affirming the importance of following through with judicial processes.
Despite concerns over potential delays and allegations of the police force politicizing the case, Wabba remained steadfast in his stance that the enforcement of the law must proceed. He addressed the speculation head-on, stating, “Prosecutorial power rests with the police. The process, to my knowledge, is actively moving forward. Accusations of blackmail or attempts to politicize the issue should not detract from the established facts.”
By bringing these issues to light, Wabba has spotlighted the ongoing challenges within the Labour Party and the broader political landscape in Nigeria, advocating for due process and the rule of law in resolving the allegations against Julius Abure.
