The United Action Front of Civil Society has strongly condemned the Nigeria Police Force for the use of tear gas on peaceful protesters in various cities across the country, including Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Bauchi, and others. The group alleged that three protesters fainted in Abuja due to the effects of the tear gas, while many others sustained injuries.

Peaceful Protest Turned Violent

According to the CSO, the protesters were peacefully demonstrating against the rising cost of living and economic hardship when they were attacked by security forces. They claimed that the protesters were forced out of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, the designated venue for the protest, by pro-government groups and subsequently dispersed with tear gas at the Eagle Square.

Olawale Okunniyi, the leader of the CSO, expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that it was a clear violation of the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest. He called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately call his officers to order and investigate the matter.

Police Under Fire

The police have come under intense criticism for their handling of the protests. The use of force against peaceful demonstrators has sparked outrage among the public and raised concerns about the government’s commitment to human rights.

Government’s Response

The government has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, there have been calls for a thorough investigation into the matter and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

Protests Continue

Despite the crackdown by security forces, protests against the rising cost of living and economic hardship have continued in several parts of the country. The demonstrations have highlighted the growing discontent among Nigerians over the government’s handling of the economy.

Economic Hardship

The rising cost of living has had a devastating impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians. The prices of food, fuel, and other essential commodities have soared, making it difficult for many people to make ends meet.

Government Under Pressure

The government is facing mounting pressure to address the economic crisis and improve the living conditions of its citizens. The protests have exposed the deep-seated anger and frustration among the people.

Way Forward

To address the ongoing crisis, the government must take urgent steps to alleviate the suffering of the people. This includes implementing policies to boost the economy, create jobs, and reduce the cost of living. It is also crucial to respect the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest.
