The announcement of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin as the Olubadan-designate has sparked a significant controversy within Ibadan’s royal circles, following claims by a prominent member of the council, Oba Abimbola Ajibola, the Otun Balogun Olubadan, that Olakulehin is currently unfit to assume the throne due to health issues.

The revered position of Olubadan became available after the passing of Oba Lekan Balogun, who led Ibadanland for two years until his death at 81. However, the succession process has been anything but smooth, with disagreements emerging over the readiness and health of the successor.

Oba Ajibola expressed his concerns during a press briefing at his residence in Sanyo, Ibadan, questioning the rush in inaugurating Olakulehin as the next Olubadan. He highlighted a lack of communication and transparency, revealing that he, despite being the second in command, has not been in touch with Olakulehin about his return and readiness to lead. “What is the hurry?” Oba Ajibola pondered, pointing out that the pressure being placed on Olakulehin seems to stem from certain individuals’ self-interests rather than the welfare of Ibadanland.

Further complicating the matter, a meeting held at Chief Bode Amoo’s residence in the Agodi Government Reserved Area reportedly endorsed Olakulehin’s appointment without Oba Ajibola’s approval. He has since distanced himself from this decision, advocating for patience and due diligence to ensure Olakulehin’s full recovery before any official coronation proceedings take place.

This stance has ignited debates on tradition versus health and readiness for leadership, with some community members and officials pushing for a swift transition while others, like Oba Ajibola, call for caution. The situation remains tense as the community awaits further developments, hoping for a resolution that honors both the health of the designate and the esteemed traditions of Ibadanland.

This unfolding drama underscores the delicate balance between adhering to cultural rites and ensuring the well-being and consent of those ascending to significant roles within the community. The next steps taken by Ibadan’s royal council will be closely watched, as they navigate this complex intersection of health, tradition, and leadership.
