“Celebrating Evang. Kayode Oyebode, An Architect Of Nigerian Christian Cinema's Renaissance” The Hype Naija

Evang. Kayode Oyebode, affectionately known as “Oju Oluwa,” stands out as a beacon of inspiration and dedication. This pioneer, whose birthday we eagerly anticipate on April 19th, has played a pivotal role in shaping the Christian film industry in Nigeria, transitioning it from humble beginnings to a formidableforce of spiritual awakening and entertainment.

The Formative Years of Christian Cinema

The journey began in the late 1980s, a time when Christian filmmaking in Nigeria was in its nascent stages, marked by trials and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Mount Zion Film Productions, although now synonymous with Christian cinema, faced initial setbacks that tested the faith and resolve of its members. Early film attempts like “Secrets of the Devil” faced hurdles that seemed insurmountable, leading to a temporary focus on stage ministrations across Nigeria.

The Catalyst of Change

The transformative moment came in 1990 with the drama ministration “The Unprofitable Servant.” Kayode Oyebode, from Kay Technical & Audio Visual Company, was invited to record the event, setting the stage for a partnership that would redefine Christian cinema in Nigeria. Oyebode, with his profound expertise in film production, proposed transitioning the drama into a television film, a suggestion that rekindled Mount Zion’s cinematic aspirations.

A Journey of Collaborative Triumphs

Under Oyebode’s guidance, Mount Zion made its foray into film, creating “The Unprofitable Servant,” which marked their debut on NTA 10, Lagos, during the 1990 Easter period. This success spawned a series of impactful films like “Beginning of the End” and “Ibere Opin Aye,” the latter becoming a landmark cinema release and a testament to the genre’s potential. Oyebode’s role extended beyond directing and editing; he was instrumental in Mount Zion’s pivot towards cinema, broadening the reach and impact of Christian narratives.

Beyond Filmmaking: A Life Transformed

Oyebode’s journey with Mount Zion was not just about filmmaking; it was a profound personal transformation. Initially distant from the faith, his engagement with the ministry’s devout approach led him to embrace Christianity, showcasing the power of art and collaboration in spiritual conversion. Today, as the General Pastor and Founder of Green Pasture Holiness Bible Church in Ibadan, his commitment to spreading the gospel continues unabated, both through his pastoral work and continued involvement in cinema.

Anticipating a Milestone

As we approach April 19th, the Christian film community and admirers of Evang. Kayode Oyebode’s work prepare to celebrate not just another year of his life but the enduring legacy of a man who bridged the gap between faith and film. His contributions
