A groundbreaking initiative to enhance access to justice and strengthen criminal law implementation has been launched in Abia State through a collaborative effort between civil society and judicial authorities. The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA), partnering with the Abia State Ministry of Justice and the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme, organized a pivotal capacity-building workshop on Thursday to address critical gaps in the state’s justice system.
The workshop, which focused on the effective implementation of the Abia State Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) 2017, marks a significant step toward reforming and modernizing the state’s approach to criminal justice. Chiemezielam Oluoha-Steve, representing the Abia State Judiciary as a workshop facilitator, revealed the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Ikechukwu Uwanna’s commitment to reviewing and strengthening the existing legal framework.
According to Oluoha-Steve’s comprehensive overview, the ACJL 2017 represents a progressive shift in the state’s criminal justice system. The law introduces several revolutionary provisions aimed at protecting both defendants’ and victims’ rights while ensuring swift justice delivery. Among its key innovations, the legislation explicitly prohibits the practice of arresting individuals for civil wrongs or contract breaches, a significant departure from previous practices that often saw civil matters inappropriately handled through criminal procedures.
