The race for the Ondo State governorship seat in the 2024 elections is intensifying, with aspirants jostling for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket. Hon. Jimi Odimayo, a member of the House of Representatives and a leading aspirant, has fired the opening salvo, declaring that leaders from Ondo South senatorial district will not support Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s bid for a single term.
Constitutional Hurdle for Aiyedatiwa
Odimayo, who represents Irele/Okitipupa Constituency, anchored his stance on the Nigerian Constitution. He explained that while Ondo South deserves to produce the next governor, recent amendments bar Aiyedatiwa from seeking re-election in November 2024 if he wins, as he would have already served a term upon completing the tenure of his predecessor.
Ondo South Demands Full Eight Years
The lawmaker emphasized that Ondo South is determined to have a governor who can serve a full eight-year term. He urged any aspirant who might be limited to a single term to step aside and prioritize the collective interest of the senatorial district.
“We, the southerners, will ensure that APC doesn’t produce anybody who would be vulnerable to legal challenges,” declared Odimayo. “Our party must not make a sentimental decision. People are watching, and we won’t tolerate anything less than eight years for the South.”
Odimayo Warns Against APC Blunder
Odimayo cautioned the APC national leadership against fielding a weak candidate. He warned that such a move could hand victory to opposition parties waiting to capitalize on the ruling party’s mistakes.
“If we bring someone who won’t serve eight years, we’ll struggle in the election,” he said. “People won’t back a candidate who can’t complete the full term.”
Odimayo’s Campaign Promises
Odimayo unveiled his own campaign platform, pledging to leverage President Bola Tinubu’s “blue economy” initiative to create jobs and boost Ondo State’s economy. He also outlined plans for subsidizing healthcare for those with diabetes and high blood pressure.

Beyond economic development, Odimayo highlighted his commitment to improving education and public health. He vowed to revitalize the educational system from primary to tertiary levels, while also addressing public health challenges like maternal mortality, infectious diseases, and chronic illnesses.
“Investing in our youth’s education and empowerment is crucial,” he declared. “I will provide accessible and free healthcare services, prioritizing the well-being of every resident.”
