A major blow to the illegal arms trade in Kaduna State has been dealt following the arrest of a notorious gun runner and the recovery of a significant cache of weapons. The suspect, Bitrus Gyang, was apprehended by police officers during a routine patrol in Buruku Division.
The arrest took place on September 19, 2024, when police officers intercepted a black Golf III saloon vehicle at Buruku Bridge. Upon inspecting the vehicle, they discovered a hidden compartment containing 20 locally-fabricated AK-47 rifles and an empty Type 06 magazine.
The officers were vigilant and conducted a thorough search of the vehicle,” said ASP Mansir Hassan, the state Police Public Relations Officer. “It was during this inspection that the concealed weapons were discovered.”
During interrogation, Gyang admitted to his involvement in gun running. He revealed that he had transported fabricated rifles on at least three previous occasions, underscoring the extent of his illicit activities.
The suspect has been cooperating with the police,” Hassan noted. “We are currently working to identify and apprehend his accomplices.”
The arrest of Gyang is a significant victory for the Kaduna State Police Command in their ongoing efforts to combat crime. The state Commissioner of Police, Audu Dabigi, praised the officers for their dedication and reassured the public of their commitment to addressing security challenges.
