In a notable development within the Nigerian legal system, popular social media influencer and cross-dresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, known widely as Bobrisky, has been convicted of abusing the Nigerian currency. This verdict was delivered by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Lagos, following Bobrisky’s admission of guilt.
Bobrisky’s conviction stems from his actions that contravened the legal provisions regarding the treatment of the Nigerian naira. During the court session on Friday, April 5, 2024, he openly acknowledged his understanding of the charges against him, stating, “yes, I am guilty,” when the allegations of naira abuse were read out.
The court has deferred the sentencing to April 9, meanwhile ordering Bobrisky’s remand in EFCC custody. Addressing the court, Bobrisky expressed remorse for his unawareness of the law prohibiting the abuse of the naira, a plea that Justice Awogboro countered by emphasizing that ignorance does not exempt one from compliance with the law.
In a bid for leniency, Bobrisky offered to leverage his substantial social media influence to educate his followers on the legal implications of mishandling the naira, expressing deep regret for his actions and pledging not to repeat them.
The charges could lead to Bobrisky facing up to six months in prison, paying a fine of N50,000, or both, according to Section 21 (1) of the CBN Act 2007. This
