Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has taken a significant step toward enhancing workers’ welfare and industrial harmony by signing an Executive Order for the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State Labour and Industrial Committee. The move underscores the administration’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for both employers and employees, promoting economic growth, and addressing labor-related issues effectively.
During a ceremony held at the Government House in Uyo on Thursday, Governor Eno inaugurated an eleven-member Labour Committee alongside a Bureau of Statistics Board. Speaking on the occasion, the governor emphasized that the Executive Order was not only symbolic but also practical, providing the necessary legal framework to empower the committee until a comprehensive law is enacted through legislative processes.
The newly established Labour and Industrial Committee is chaired by Rt. Hon. Nse Essien and includes prominent figures such as Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan, Mmakim Antai, Rt. Hon. Nse Ntuen, Hon. Ekerette Ekoenyong, Sunday Etor Isokobo, Mr. Ubong Udo Uquang, Mr. Abraham Odion, and Mr. Uwemedimo Udoh. Additionally, the Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Planning and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour serve as ex officio members, ensuring seamless coordination between the committee and government agencies.
In his address, Governor Eno highlighted the importance of establishing this committee to address pressing labor issues in the state. “I just signed Executive Order number two to establish the Akwa Ibom State Labour and Industrial Committee,” he said. That order is to give credence and impetus to the inauguration we are about to do this morning, while we work assiduously as the executive to send the bill to the House of Assembly for the passage into law of the Labour committee at the State level.
By issuing the Executive Order, Governor Eno aims to provide immediate operational authority to the committee, enabling it to begin its critical work without delay. While the order serves as an interim measure, the administration is committed to drafting and passing legislation that will fully institutionalize the committee’s role and responsibilities. This dual approach ensures continuity and sustainability in addressing labor disputes, promoting fair practices, and safeguarding workers’ rights.
The establishment of the Labour and Industrial Committee aligns with broader national efforts to improve working conditions and enhance productivity. In recent months, President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to advancing workers’ welfare and implementing wage reforms. Vice President Babagana Shettima has similarly emphasized the need for policies that protect labor rights while encouraging investment and development.
For Akwa Ibom State, the committee represents a localized effort to tackle unique challenges faced by its workforce. By bringing together experienced leaders from various sectors, the administration seeks to create a platform where stakeholders can engage constructively, resolve conflicts amicably, and foster collaboration between employers and employees. This approach is expected to contribute significantly to industrial peace, which is essential for attracting investments and driving economic growth.
One of the key objectives of the Labour and Industrial Committee is to review existing labor laws and propose amendments that reflect contemporary realities. As industries evolve and new forms of employment emerge, it becomes imperative to update regulations to ensure they adequately protect workers’ interests. The committee will also focus on enforcing compliance with labor standards, investigating complaints, and mediating disputes between parties involved.
Moreover, the inclusion of the Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Planning and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour as ex officio members highlights the state government’s intention to integrate the committee’s activities with broader administrative functions. This synergy will facilitate information sharing, resource mobilization, and policy alignment, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of interventions.
Beyond resolving labor disputes, the committee is expected to play a pivotal role in tackling unemployment and skills development challenges within the state. By collaborating with educational institutions, vocational training centers, and private sector partners, the committee can design programs aimed at equipping residents with relevant skills for emerging job markets. Such initiatives could include apprenticeships, internships, and entrepreneurship training, empowering individuals to secure gainful employment or start their own businesses.
Furthermore, the committee may explore opportunities to promote local content in industries such as oil and gas, agriculture, and manufacturing. Encouraging the use of indigenous talent and resources can stimulate economic activity, reduce reliance on external inputs, and create jobs for Akwa Ibom residents.
The announcement of the Labour and Industrial Committee has been met with optimism among workers and labor unions in Akwa Ibom State. Many see this as a positive development that acknowledges the vital contributions of workers to the state’s economy and demonstrates the government’s willingness to listen to their concerns. However, some observers caution that the success of the committee will depend largely on its ability to act independently, transparently, and decisively.
Looking ahead, the committee faces several challenges, including limited funding, resistance from certain quarters, and the complexity of navigating diverse interests. Nevertheless, its establishment marks an important milestone in the state’s journey toward achieving balanced industrial relations and sustainable development. With the right leadership, strategies, and support from all stakeholders, the Akwa Ibom State Labour and Industrial Committee has the potential to set a benchmark for other states in Nigeria.
As Governor Umo Eno continues to champion workers’ welfare and industrial harmony, the eyes of the nation will be on Akwa Ibom to observe how effectively this initiative translates into tangible improvements for its workforce. Through proactive governance and inclusive policies, the state stands poised to lead by example in creating a more equitable and prosperous society for all its citizens.
