The Anambra State Police Command has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the handling of bodies recovered from a recent boat accident on the Anam River, specifically addressing rumors about the burial of actor Junior Pope. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, confirmed that contrary to circulating rumors, Junior Pope’s body was not buried by the riverside and remains in the morgue.
Last Wednesday’s disaster claimed the lives of five individuals, including notable personalities like Junior Pope, Abigail Frederick, Precious Oforum, and Joseph Anointing, when their boat capsized. This incident caused a significant stir, particularly concerning the whereabouts and treatment of the victims’ bodies. Ikenga explained that while three families consented to have their relatives buried near the river, this did not include Junior Pope. Reports had inaccurately stated that his body was exhumed for a proper burial, creating confusion and distress among fans and family members.
Following these events, the police took swift action to correct the misinformation. SP Ikenga detailed that the bodies of Junior Pope and another individual are still at the morgue, waiting for their families to make the necessary funeral arrangements. The premature news of a riverside burial and subsequent exhumation pertained to another victim whose family requested a reburial in her home state.
In response to this tragedy, the Anambra police have intensified their investigative efforts. They have already arrested the two boat operators and have taken a voluntary statement from Adanma Luke, the producer of the film project during which the accident occurred. The police’s actions align with directives from CP Aderemi Adeoye, who has emphasized the importance of thorough investigations to determine potential criminal liability.
This incident has not only highlighted the dangers associated with river transport but also the need for rigorous safety protocols. CP Adeoye reassured the public that the investigation would be comprehensive and transparent, with an aim to prevent future occurrences and ensure justice for the victims and their families.
The community and the entertainment industry are mourning the loss of Junior Pope and his colleagues. As the investigation continues, there is a collective call for improved safety measures in film production and transportation in water-bound regions to safeguard lives against similar tragic incidents in the future.
