Reno Omokri, a prominent sociopolitical analyst, has called on President Bola Tinubu to consider a comprehensive investigation into former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, rather than focusing solely on Godwin Emefiele, the immediate past governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). In a series of posts on X, Omokri critiques the past administration, contrasting it with the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan, whom he regards as leading one of the best governments in Nigeria’s history due to its conscience-driven approach.
Omokri’s commentary sheds light on what he perceives as a significant downturn in national security and economic prosperity under Buhari’s leadership. He argues that Boko Haram was effectively defeated by the time Buhari took office, a situation that deteriorated over the next eight years, leading to widespread insecurity across Northern Nigeria. The analyst provides stark examples, including over 400 terrorists escaping from Kuje prison, bandits invading the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, and significant military losses to illustrate the severe security challenges faced during Buhari’s tenure.
Furthermore, Omokri contrasts the economic conditions between the Jonathan and Buhari administrations, noting that Nigeria’s GDP significantly declined by about $100 billion under Buhari, only to see some recovery in the early months of Tinubu’s presidency. He emphasizes the wealth accumulation by certain individuals close to Buhari, suggesting a disparity between the general populace’s economic hardships and the prosperity of a select few.
In his plea, Omokri warns against the potential whitewashing of Buhari’s presidency and argues against making Emefiele a scapegoat for the broader failures attributed to Buhari’s administration. He suggests that accountability should extend beyond party lines and include a thorough examination of the actions and decisions of Buhari’s closest advisors and allies. Omokri’s statements highlight a call for transparency, accountability, and a balanced assessment of past governance to inform future actions and policies.
